Jamie Leonhart: News & Musings

LYRICS, one song at a time - October 13, 2007

I spend my time making small circles
Tiny dots on a page
Encircled by my own designs that keep spinning round
Spinning round

After some time, the strands start to unwind
Spinning out, spinning out
Exposing new skin
So my designs scatter free in the wind
Unsteady now
Steady now

Oh but the tide isn’t waiting
And my mind is still racing
But the momentum keeps changing
Slow down
Slow down

Will there, in time,
Be a chance to rewind
To gather up my old designs
Dot by dot and line by line

Oh but the tide isn’t waiting
And my mind is still racing
But the momentum keeps changing
Slow down
Slow down

And for each night that will end with the day
There is a dream that keeps slipping away
So I keep trying to sleep…

Oh but the tide isn’t waiting
And my mind is still racing
But the momentum keeps changing
Slow down
Slow down

One week to go... - October 2, 2007

Had our first rehearsal today with Rob DiPietro on drums. He's wonderful and is doing a great job stepping into Marc Dalio's large shoes (He's on tour with Erin Mckeon, so couldn't do the CD release)

Michael has written such gorgeous arrangements -- can't wait to hear them in the space. Hope to see you all @ the show.

A very busy beginning to fall - September 10, 2007

I'm sitting in Osaka, at the end of a really lovely 2 weeks in Japan with Michael and Steely Dan, gearing up for the fall...a few musical highlights:

- CD RELEASE SHOW @ JOES PUB on October 10 @ 9:30 PM - get tickets @
Every Monday for the month of October (10/1, 8, 15, & 22) I'll be singing back-up for Judy Kuhn @ Joe's Pub celebrating the release of her "Laura Nyro tribute CD" on Sh-ka-boom Records (which I sang on as well.) Also going down to Kennedy Center @ the end of the month.

One of my favorite folks to perform with, Wednesday 10/3 @ Rockwood Music Hall

Great songwriter who is celebrating the release of his beautiful new ep , which I was fortunate to be a part of. Saturday, 10/6 @ 9 PM - Crash Mansion.

on a completely different note, I'll be teaching a 2-DAY INTENSIVE PERFORMANCE WORKSHOP here in NY on October 20 & 21 called
GETTING UNSTUCK: the mindful artist in the city

Please e-mail me if you are interested in this powerful workshop.

greetings from tokyo - August 20, 2007

Anyone who has ever flown with me knows that I can't sleep on planes. Only once in my adult life have I honest-to-goodness slept, and that was on a very posh chair-turns-into-bed kind of flight with pjs and a down comforter...

So, 13+ hours, 3 meals, 3 CSI episodes, 3 House episodes and the (ugh) 2005 version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - here I am in Tokyo.

Calling tonight a bit of a wash, and Michael and I will adventure out in the AM - to the fishmarket. Sexy, I know...

more tomorrow.
xx jamie

Okay, nothing dramatic or catastrophic, just a week's change.

The new date:
Wednesday, October 10 @ 9:30 PM. Still at the fabulous Joe's Pub.

So you can wish me an early birthday. Give me the gift of your attendance.

My niece's video for "take your time" - July 8, 2007

Ella, my 20-month-old niece beat me to the punch. Here's the link to her video for "Take Your Time":

7/4/07: Tunes, radio, video & cd release - July 4, 2007

If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.
- Henry David Thoreau, from "Walden."

How's that for independence?

So step -- at your own pace -- to the following:

As promised, I have posted the first of 4 songs from my upcoming full-length CD. The track is "Take Your Time" -- this song will be up through next Wednesday, 7/11, when another will take its place.

Either click on the "Music" Button and enjoy, or go to and take a listen. If you have a myspace non-music page, I'd love for you to put it up as your profile song for the week!

Shoot me an e-mail or leave me a comment on my page about it. The first 10 people who do this for all four songs will get a free CD!

My intrepid band (Michael Leonhart, Gary Wang and Marc Dalio) and I traveled down to WVIA to record a very late night live session. You'll hear some tunes from my new CD as well as a beautiful song, "Let the Flower Grow" that is written by my father-in-law, Jay Leonhart.

Check out the bio & pic:
If you're in the Wilkes-Barre area, you'll be able to pick it up on the radio on WVIA-FM 89.9

If you're not, listen via live stream at

3) TAKE YOUR TIME, the video

Barney Miller and his fabulous team shot a video for "Take Your Time" starring a moody and glamorized me. Check out for the skinny on Mr. Miller or check out a video he made for a dear friend and amazing musician Paul Brill at .

More to come…

October 16 @ 7 PM. Mark it down, folks.
Need I say more, except that it's also my birthday?

See you soon

names of groups of birds - June 15, 2007

My friend e-mailed me asking if I knew that a collection of peacocks is called an ostentation.

i did not (now I, and you, do)

So I found some more. My current personal favorites:

a parliament of owls
a flamboyance of flamingos
a bouquet of pheasants
a conspiracy or unkindness of ravens
a murmuration of starlings
a pitying of turtledoves
a charm of hummingbirds
and simply, a peep of chickens

Am I obsessed? - May 19, 2007

All joking aside, I think that I am obsessed with Elvis Costello. As I type, I hope that maybe he'll read this and...? I don't know what the "and" is, but it's surely something good.

I saw him perform twice this week, once at the special webcast at the Ed Sullivan Theater, then at the Nokia Theater for a full show - 2+ hours of amazing songs performed passionately by the whole band.

It's the vitality, daring, passion and intelligence that I am drawn to. The commitment to creating, learning and the pushing of the expected boundaries.

Maybe I'm not obsessed, just deeply deeply inspired.

Tired, nervous and happy - April 27, 2007

The past few weeks have been amazing and tense and promising and nerve-wracking. Life, right?

We completed recording and mixing my CD and are now sitting with a potential order. I think that the release will not officially be until the early fall, but some leaks will probably occur...
I have the good fortune of having amazing talent on my CD, including:

Gary Wang
Marc Dalio
Joe Strasser
Katie Scheele
Rob Jost
Paul Olenick
Michael Blake
Gili Sharett
Christine Kim
and many other extremely talented folks.

Michael's production and arrangements are amazing.

I'm happy.

Also happy about a great show the other night at Rockwood Music Hall. My favorite place to play in NYC. I had such a good time at the show and then playing with both Michael and Paul Brill in the subsequent sets.

Then, last night, my band (Marc, Gary and Michael) and I piled into a minivan and recorded a show for WVIA's "homegrown" radio show, which will air in June. Exact dates to be posted.

In all, I feel very alive. present. trepidatious. excited.

In SF - March 29, 2007

It's rare that business and pleasure work so well least in my life's experience. But I am getting a taste of it right now. I'm in San Francisco, playing some shows that pay well (lhallelujah!) AND I'm spending time with my siblings and niece, AND my husband is in my group, so I don't have to be without him. Sometimes, life is really good.

new photos - March 1, 2007

I just got a first look at the photo from a shoot I did for this new CD and I am so excited. They are just beautiful. I can not wait to share them with you all. Check back soon...

Album progress, definitions pending - February 27, 2007

The album (yes, I still say album) is coming along really well, and with it the challenges of "self-definition". It's a funny thing, making an album, or I suppose any artistic/creative endeavor that is product based.

Essentially, I, or anyone else in this spot, am trying to define a part of myself, sometimes small, sometimes almost too great to contain, in one piece of work. A collection of songs, with artwork and photos. And that's going to define me to a certain - hopefully (?) large - group of people who know nothing else of me but that.

Makes me a little queasy, I have to admit. Queasy and faint, as some of my friends would say.

When i am in the moment of creating, I don't worry about these things. It's just in the quiet times that I get a bit anxious.

So bring on the din...

Michael and co. on the radio - December 30, 2006

A pared down “live” performance of Michael’s music will be streamed this Tuesday, 1/2/07 at 9 PM on WVAI’s “Homegrown Music” radio show. Michael, Gary and I went down to Pittston, PA for a late night performance and interview. Some sublime stuff to be heard. Enjoy!

Happy New Year - December 30, 2006

2006 was a pretty radical year -- the challenges and growth I've encountered throughout the year propel me into this next year with great joy, drive and creativity.

I have been fortunate to play with some amazing musicians, in both my group and other’s.

I have had the good fortune of meeting you all, and bending your ears with my stories and song. Thank you for your support. I’m looking forward to exploding into this new year with you both behind and in front of me!

I wish you all a happy, healthy, peaceful and prosperous new year, full of possibility.

Recording part II - December 27, 2006

We had an amazing and intense 24-hours at the Clubhouse Studio in Rhinebeck, NY. Amazing equipment, AMAZING band.

We tracked 8 tunes and they came out so beautifully. So now the sleeves are rolled up and we're deep into it. We're going to have some guest artists and producers put their touches on it. As soon as something is ready, I'll post a limited "leak" on my myspace page...

more to come.
happy, merry, peaceful and prosperous.

Recording has begun... - December 14, 2006

My amazing band and I are going up to The Clubhouse, a recording studio located in Rhinebeck, New York, to begin recording this body of music that you've been hearing (and loving, it seems) in our live performances.

I am so excited to hear these songs realized "larger than life." We've spent a lot of time crafting and cultivating, and now it's time to put it out there.

Some of the tunes we'll be recording:

Take Your Time
The Spider & the Fly
The Truth About Suffering (Slow Down)
Satisfy Your Soul
Who Says Words
The End of It All
and more...

I'll keep updating as it all unfolds...
