ONE NIGHT ONLY! ESTUARY: an artist/mother story - 7 PM

425 Lafayette Street
New York City New York 10003
212.967.7555 [map]
Price: $15

I am thrilled to bring ESTUARY back to it's home turf, Joe's Pub.  After some additional development and performances at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, we are bringing it back for one evening before digging back into it to make more changes.

I loved performing in Philly - I got to see how the show was received without a "home audience," and it was wonderful.  The feedback was invaluable and so moving.  I heard from varying age groups - from college students to octogenarians.  I spoke to people of different gender, race, sexual orientation, with and without children...and everyone had something important to say.

Older women shared their stories of struggle; students from University of the Arts shared their anxiety about balancing career and the desire to have a family; men spoke to me about their fear of failure; an impeccably dressed woman in her 70s asked if she could "hug me like a sister" while another told me that it was my obligation to take the show across the country.  An ob/gyn emotionally shared that I was telling the story that her patients only dare "confess" to her in the privacy of her office.  And a dear friend from college, associate professor of ob/gyn at the Hospital of U Penn, had a most wonderful comment:  "Your uterus was singing!"  I couldn't make that up if I tried...

I hope you can come, and I hope that you share your story too.

Estuary: An artist/mother story - 7 PM

425 Lafayette Street
New York City New York 10003
[map]
Price: $15

I couldn't be more excited to announce that ESTUARY: An artist/mother story is slated for performance. I've been working on this piece for the past year + and I am so proud of what it's turned into.

A description:

Jamie Leonhart’s new piece, Estuary: an artist/mother story, is a musical exploration of the challenges and unanticipated realities of being an artist and a new parent. The nascence of this piece began soon after the birth of Leonhart’s son, with the realization that the lens through which she had previously seen her life as an artist had changed. Leonhart navigates the changes in her artistic work, her relationship with her husband, and this new insane world of everything “baby” with equal parts humor and heartache.

Leonhart is unflinching in her candor when she sings about the conflict, the loneliness, and the anger that accompany the mother/artist collision.

Estuary: an artist/mother story features original music with collaborator Michael Leonhart performed by a stellar band including Saskia Lane and Pauline Kim, and is directed by Joanna Settle.

Estuary: was created as a part of the New York Voices commission. Joe's Pub New York Voices series presents new works from critically-acclaimed performers commissioned by Joe's Pub and supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The show will be performed Sunday - Tuesday, November 1-3.

On Friday I'll also be singing my song, "The Truth About Suffering" arranged for THREEDS.

I'm currently developing a new piece that examines the complex relationship between being an artist and mother, and this show will be a precursor to that.

I have been so fortunate and delighted to be a part of these performances.  The Breithaupt brothers are doing it again.  I highly recommend this show.

Don and Jeff Breithaupt, the award-winning composer and lyricist (respectively) that comprise the Breithaupt Brothers, bring their Songbook Revue back to Joe's Pub for another all-star evening, featuring a bumper crop of new songs and favorites, a sparkling house band, and a line-up of performers that includes: James Naughton (Chicago, City of Angels); Jan Maxwell (Follies); Annie Golden (Assassins, The Full Monty, Hair: The Film); Christian Campbell (Reefer Madness: The Musical, HBO's Big Love); America Olivo (Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark); Tyley Ross (East Village Opera Company, The Who's Tommy); singer-songwriters Jamie Leonhart (The Truth About Suffering) and Greg Naughton (The Sweet Remains); jazz sensations Carolyn Leonhart (Steely Dan, New8thDay) and Sachal Vasandani(Hi-Fly, We Move, Eyes Wide Open); and the irrepressible actress and cabaret spitfire, Shelley McPherson (Beneath the Hush, A Whisper).

I hear that JANE MONHEIT will also be singing on this show.

Jay Leonhart, friends & family present the life and music of Judy Garland - 7 PM (doors at 6)

170 Central Park West
New York New York 10024
USA (212) 873-3400 [map]
Price: free

We completed our first show a few weeks ago to a roaring success.

This show will feature my esteemed father-in-law Jay Leonhart and the legendary Bucky Pizzarelli.

We will be exploring the life and music of Judy Garland -- I am thrilled to be a part of it.

Although it's a free show, it's first come/first served -- the WW2 show was completely full, with many listening from the lobby and others turned away.

What a thrill to play with Bucky Pizzarelli.  Already in his 80s, he is sharper than a lot of youngsters I know, and his playing is beautiful.   We had a great time playing some of the tunes that Judy Garland made famous and Jay was a wonderful emcee (as well as bass player, arranger and pater familias!)

I'm looking forward to the Sinatra show on May 10.

So - this show will contain the debut of our yet unnamed vocal trio. Come and give us a name.  We will be supported by the wondrous Matt Ray (piano) Gary Wang (bass) and Jeff Lipstein (drums.)

196 Allen Street
New York New York 10002
US 212.477.4155 [map]
Price: no cover

My dear friend Ben Wagner has more energy and umph than most others I've ever met.  Not only does he hold down a full-time high-pressure job, but this year alone he has also managed to release a documentary, "Mr. Rogers & Me," run multiple marathons, HAVE A BABY, and (the reason for this show) release a CD entitled "Forever Young" -- here are Ben's words about this CD/CD release:

The record features many of my dearest friends lending their voices, guitars and keys. It is our intention to donate proceeds to The Fred Rogers Center and The Campaign For A Commercial-Free Childhood. Though neither is affiliated with the project in any way, we believe strongly in supporting their efforts towards advancing early learning and children’s media.

The complete “Forever Young” track list:

1 - The Rainbow Connection (featuring Amber Rubarth)
2 - Forever Young (featuring Emily Easterly)
3 - The Only Living Boy In New York (featuring Chris Abad)
4 - Mr. Tambourine Man (featuring Bryan Dunn)
5 - You Are My Sunshine (featuring Jason Walsmith & Becca Smith)
6 - Sweet Baby James (featuring Jeff Jacobson)
7 - You’ve Got A Friend (featuring Mai Bloomfield)
8 - Golden Slumbers (featuring Casey Shea)
9 - Amazing Grace (featuring Jamie Leonhart)
10 - Moon River

Performing at Rockwood is a treat.  The biggest small venue in NY, to me.  The sound is impeccable, the staff phenomenal, the audience attentive and appreciative.

So I'm so glad to be there, solo, again.

Please join me. I plan to keep it pretty smoldering and intimate. There will be some familiar tunes, and some less so. But you'll only know if you come.

So do.

"Kay Ashley's gorgeous, moving "Heliotrope" occupies a charmed point triangulated by Joni Mitchell's "Hejira," Paul Simon's "Graceland," and Nick Drake's "Pink Moon." A master of stacked vocal harmonies and alternate guitar tunings, Ashley's melodies are instantly memorable yet devoid of cliché. At once a love letter to Africa, India, and men in her past, "Heliotrope" is a travelogue of the soul—betraying the influence of far-flung cultures while remaining both recognizably American and distinctly universal."

A Holiday Benefit vol II CD release

Rebel Spirit Music Presents A Holiday Benefit Vol. II @ The Canal Room - 7:30 PM

285 w. Broadway @ Canal Street
NYC NY [map]
Price: $10

"A Holiday Benefit" is a CD featuring classic and original holiday music performed and recorded by some of NYC's best emerging musical talent including: Casey Shea, Kelley McRae, Brent Shuttleworth, Deena Goodman, Dov Rosenblatt, Rosi Golan, Ian Axel, Benjamin Wagner, Derek James, Kyle Paas, Bryan Dunn, Chris Abad, Nate Campany and ME!

Proceeds from this event and sales of the CD will benefit 826NYC, a Brooklyn based nonprofit dedicated to supporting students ages 6-18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and helping teachers inspire their students to write.

(Check out http://www.826nyc.org for more info)

This event will feature live performances by the above-named, djs, raffles, silent auctions, and other holiday fun. It’ll also be your first chance to buy the record!

What a fun show. It was great to hear so many wonderful artists in one night, in one space, for a good cause.

A lovely blog "You Sing, I Write" had some lovely things to say about the show...
"Jamie Leonhart took the stage next as Benjamin Wagner, host and creator of the annual concert series, introduced her as “one of the finest voices I know and one of the finest people I know.” Leonhart’s vocals are heavenly as she blends jazz, pop and soul together, making for a truly impressive set. Playing three songs off her debut album, The Truth About Suffering, Leonhard wowed the crowd. Comparisons to Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin can be heard throughout Leonahart’s classically elegant tunes. (You can listen to some of her MP3’s here to see what I’m talking about.)"

very sweet - thank you Annie!

The announced line-up so far includes Down Beat darling Kate McGarry, Greg Naughton, Catherine Russell, Carolyn Leonhart, The Color Purple's Montego Glover, Jamie Leonhart, the East Village Opera Company's Tyley Ross, Alyson Palmer of BETTY, Shelley McPherson, Rikki Rumball, and teen sensation Stephanie Welton. "In the world of fraternal songwriting teams, America may have had the Gershwins - George and Ira - but Canada's got the Breithaupts." (Richard Ouzounian, The Toronto Star)
